I don't want to forget this either, so here you go:

Top 10 traditional bars in Brussels

Brussels has no shortage of cosy bars where you can sample the finest Belgian beers while soaking up the atmosphere. John Brunton picks the city's best 'estaminets'

New CV

As I am wont to do, I've updated my cv again, to reflect all the groovy crap I've done lately...because as we all know, it's only about "What Have You Done For Me Lately?"

Link is to the right, beneath my mug shot over there.

British Attitudes on EU Membership

Okay, I lied about hibernating...I'm linking this here, so I don't forget it, as I might need it for a talk I'm giving in a few weeks.

From the Guardian:
Happy in Europe but still best friends with the US

Support for Britain's EU membership is rising, not falling, according to a Guardian/ICM poll published today. Carried out ahead of parliamentary debate on the new European treaty, the poll also finds that voters back Gordon Brown's European strategy, with fewer than one in three agreeing with Conservative claims that the treaty will leave Britain worse off.

The poll paints a picture of a country offering clear if unenthusiastic support for continued EU membership, but with no appetite for deeper engagement.

Okay, back to hibernation now...

Lifeblogging

Uhhhhh, I think I have the flu. Brain and attention span melting to levels of a ten year old.

Hmmmm, so that's why I watched, for no apparent reason, The Fairly Oddparents earlier today...

I'm now going to return to hibernation, jury duty and class tomorrow be damned...I guess my students will be watching a movie on King Charles I.

A little late for Halloween, drew...

'Cause I like this picture...

"Batman's gonna jack you up, son!"

That or he was just bored stiff by bowling.

Although I like to think this is just some sort of primal scream of rage after the Joker capped Robin or something.

"wonderful mad electropop symphonies"

A hat tip to Warren Ellis on this, and posted here because I don't want to forget it, let's hear it for the Oxford-based techno group Space Heroes of the People, with songs located here.

"Barbie is a Robot" and "Tesco Disco" really tickle my fancy...

AHA Trip

I was in Washington D.C. last week for the American Historical Association (AHA) annual conference. While I didn't attend much of anything of the actual conference (I was there only for AHA interviews really, but I did check out the publisher exhibit hall...mmmm, cheap books), I did get to hang out with some good friends, some I see regularly and some I don't see often enough.

This is me, Sean Stone (navy secrets dude), and Lemont Dobson (medieval archaeologist, or "digger of dirt") as we pose by the Michigan plinth/column of the World War Two memorial:

Sean, Lemont, and myself posing in front of the Washington Memorial holding the DCL Cup (the trophy in our fantasy football league):

Duncan Woodhead (budding US colonial historian and British teachers union bad arse) and myself in our hotel room. The place was called the Hotel Palomar, and was pretty nice, but I called it the Hotel Porno for some questionable design choices:

Lemont and Duncan washed out with some strange flash I used, making them look orange. Maybe it's fakebake?

Also, if anyone is interested, I put some holiday pictures of the Boy up on the Evanography, so head over there and check them out.

Oh so clever

Okay, so I'm back. Kudos for me.

Anyway, in case you're curious, I recently finished beating the hell out of a basic Blogger template so the CMU Department of History could have a news and announcements blog that looks almost seamlessly like it's a part of the regular site (key word: almost). You can check it out here.
