March 12, 2005: So you
might have heard, I was in Belgium and Luxembourg for the last several
days for a seminar on the EU and NATO sponsored by Fulbright. This
series of pictures deals with our Saturday trip to Bruges, one of many
places labeled the 'Venice of the North', as well as some drunken revelry
at the end. It was certainly very beautiful.
March 12, 2005: Lots
of canals in this place, and Fulbrighters!
March 12, 2005: This
one is a favorite of mine. I love the clouds. Taken from the
roof patio of the College of Europe.
March 12, 2005: Dueling
cameras!! With Fulbrighter Ann of Spain! It sort of looks like
the camera is her right eye.
March 12, 2005: The
belfry in Bruges. You can clearly see the three layers that were
built separately, lowest one is 13th century. Top is 15th
century. Three guesses on the middle.
March 12, 2005: The
main square near the belfry. Ain't it quaint?
March 12, 2005: This
is the outside of the Church of the Holy Blood, which had a lower church
for commoners and and upper church for the rich.
March 12, 2005: I like
this picture. The shadows play off the walls well. This is
inside the church for the plebs.
March 12, 2005: An early Michelangelo. And they let us take pictures
of it. It's Mary and Jesus, in case you don't get it.
March 13, 2005: Okay, we switched cities. This is Brussels. I
liked this view looking toward the Grand Place (hint, the big spire is the
Hotel de Ville). I didn't take many pictures in Brussels because I
have shitloads from our trip in 2001.
March 13, 2005: Cheesy, tourist crap. And no, I don't know what the
fuck he is wearing.
March 15, 2005: So, Brussels is filled with restaurants, bars, and
pubs. Despite the variety, what is one to do to pass the time?
Why nothing more than climbing out our hotel window and partying on the
roof! And no, I don't know what Ann of Spain was doing, something
about spicing the picture up.
March 15, 2005: Chad of Sweden is just too happy to be drinking on the
roof, but then that's his superpower, from what I understand.
March 15, 2005: Ramo of Denmark, currently teaching those quacks at the
WHO in Copenhagen a thing or too about hospital-borne illnesses.
Well, not right at this moment. This moment he is drinking on the
roof of the Hotel Astrid.
March 15, 2005: And later we hit more bars. Kevin of Austria (not
the one on the right) had to have the damn fishbowl of beer, which tasted
like dirty feet. He drank it anyway. Mckenzie of the
Netherlands is amazed at his fortitude.
March 15, 2005: Dueling cameras again!! AAIIEEE!!!
